I bought a domain name … now what? 10 things to do next

Do you wonder I bought a domain, what now?

First of all, congratulations on your new domain purchase! 🙂 🙂

What's next?

In this articleI'll show you the fun and profitable things you can do with your newly registered domain name. You don't have to be a tech guy or girl, nor do you have to raise a ton of money to hire someone to try to do something useful with your domain.

The best thing you can do is start a blog about …

… blog gives you financial freedom, live life on your own terms, and escape the boring 9-5 schedule and office politics.

Check out my detailed guide how to start a blog in 7 easy steps or learn more about blogging here.

Buying a domain name is a sign that you have an address or a place where you can be on the World Wide Web (a.k.a. Internet).

A registered domain can help you build your online business, build your brand, and even if you're not ready for something like this, it can help you brand your social profiles.

Yeah, you heard that right.

Let's check out 10 Easy and Fun (and Profitable) Things to Do with Your Domain Name.

Each use of the domain name below would cost you less than $ 100 per year. This is the lowest value it can give, while some specific uses are less than $ 5 per month Most of them are completely free.

Ready to go?

Let's go!

1 Create your own website or blog with the domain

The best use of a domain after registering it is to start a blog or website on it. A blog, in case you didn't know, is a place or website that pops up when someone types your domain name into the browser's address bar.

90% of domains registered online lead to an owner's blog. It can be:

  1. A personal blog where you share your ideas with the world,
  2. A blog about making money (like mine you're reading right now).
  3. Or an online representation of your offline business to reach new customers.

If you already have the domain name, I recommend creating a blog (website) around it. Blogging is the best form of online business (leave the social benefits of it alone) and you can quickly make a good income from your skills and knowledge.

This is a great way to pay off your debt and start an independent life. I say this because I did that. In addition to paying off my loans, I also helped my dad renovate his offline business (paying off his debt and building a new grocery store) with my blogging income.

There are tons of ways to make money blogging like monetization through ads, affiliate marketing (some friends I know make up to $ 30,000 a month from their blogs), selling services (freelance writing , virtual assistance etc) and even creating your own services products (works well after you have a range of readers or a community).

1. Get hosting for your domain

The next thing you need to do after registering a domain is to buy hosting for it.

If you don't already know, let me explain what a domain is and why you need hosting.

One domain corresponds to your address for your offline retail store. And hosting is like a store where you keep your goods for sale (blog posts, pictures, media files, etc.). I have it?

Now for hosting there are a dozen hosting providers. Never settle for free hosting or something too good to be true. These do more harm than good.

I recommend Bluehost hosting (which is affordable) and easy to use. I'm not a technical guy and when it comes to doing business online I want a resource / hosting to turn to if I have a breakdown. Bluehost has never let me down.

Their basic plan (good for beginners and sites with decent traffic) starts at $ 2.99 / month.

2. Connect your domain to Bluehost Hosting and install WordPress on it

After you've bought the hosting but bought your domain name elsewhere, all that's left to do is to instruct the domain name to refer visitors to your hosting. You can do this simply by updating the domain's DNS.

I'll share the step-by-step way to do this with the Godaddy registered domain (the steps are mostly the same if you've used other domain registrars like Google domains etc).

To point your Godaddy domain to Bluehost:

  1. Log into your Godaddy domain
  2. Click on "Manage my domains" under the quick links (shown when you click on your account).
  3. Select the domain from the list of your domains.
  4. Click on Manage DNS at the end of the page.
  5. In the Name Server section, add the following to each:
  6. ns1.bluehost.com
  7. ns2.bluehost.com
  8. Save it and your domain will now show on Bluehost hosting.

The next part is closed Install WordPress on Bluehost Hosting. You can do this simply by logging into your cPanel and clicking on the WordPress icon there. The process is self explanatory.

After installing WordPress, there is one final step before you can post and start your blog. And that is the design of your blog.

3. Design your blog

Once installed, your WordPress blog will look pretty simple and raw. To get more visitors, turn your readers into subscribers and give them the overall experience that you need for a great looking blog.

Here you need a WordPress theme.

I suggest elegant themes (they have a cool elegant theme discount for you too). They're really great to design and have a built-in drag and drop editor that allows you to create a homepage and design your blog without a single line of code. Check out my in-depth review on elegant topics here.

Elegant Themes gives you access to 87 themes (+ plugins) for just $ 69, which is less than $ 1 each. Needless to say, they are number 1 theme sellers worldwide.

Click the button below for a copy of the elegant themes, then install the best one from the 87 themes.

2 Create a stand-alone landing page

Here at DigitalGYD, we don't believe in one single rule.

If you don't want to blog and are still wondering, "I bought a domain … now what?", We have 9 more options for you!

Read on to discover more ideas …

If you're not ready to blog just yet, you can create a simple one-page website and convert visitors into leads / sales or customers.

Sometimes you just want a landing page (a landing page is an online portal such as a one-page website that has only one goal of converting your visitors and getting them to do their desired job).

A landing page is different from a website in that you don't have to update it with content often and there are no additional pages attached. The goal of landing pages is to get visitors to land on that page and do what is expected of them (e.g. signing up for your email list, attending one of your webinars, buying one from you sold product or making an appointment with you). .

What can you do with a landing page?

1) Get customers for your offline business

Do you have an existing business (like an auto repair shop)?

You can Create an online landing page and tweak it to appear when someone is looking for something near you your business (like auto repair shop near me or in San Francisco).

Now they click on your page and get information on how to get to you (maps, phone number, location). Boom, you have your customer who would otherwise never know you.

The same applies to any offline business such as a Beauty salon, a Animal care business, a spa.

Create landing page on domainLanding page examples

The landing page technique works well if you also provide services (such as an attorney general or a freelance writer).

2) Get leads and sales for your courses, products

If you're already working online and have something to sell, you can use a landing page as a funnel for lead generation.

Just create a landing page that focuses on the benefits of your product / email course or guide magnet and ask readers to download it by purchasing it or providing their email address.

How do I create a landing page with your domain?

With the advancement of technology, you can create a landing page in minutes that doesn't require any programming knowledge. I use successful landing pages to create landing pages in minutes. Successful landing pages also as built-in (and editable) landing pages for various requirements such as:

  • Auto repair shop
  • Restaurant booking page
  • Appointments page for spas and salons
  • Course registration page
  • Course delivering side
  • Podcast and webinar login page
  • Author? They also have landing pages where you can send visitors a sample chapter of your upcoming book and then ask them to buy your book / info product.
  • a blank page to create something from scratch
  • More than 160 pre-designed landing pages that will suit almost all of your needs.

Assuming you've already purchased the hosting above, all you need to do is make your copy of the successful landing pages. All you need to do is redirect your domain to the landing page (or create a blog as in Step 1 above and use the successful destination to create a page on that blog pages).

Having a professional email address will make your contact information more believable, easier to remember, and branded.

5 Freelancer? Create a portfolio for your unused domain

If you are a freelancer and wondering what to do with your registered but unused domain, you can create an online portfolio where you can view your clients' work.

If you're just starting out, you can create simple examples and place them on your website to showcase to your potential customers.

Having a website is very important to a freelancer, I know because I also make a living as a freelancer. You can view my portfolio of authors here.

Suppose you are tired of doing serious online business.

But the same old question "I bought a domain name, what now" bothers you over and over again.

Because you're not in the mood to start a business and just want to have fun with your domain …

… You can create a full private blog to share your personal photos and articles with friends and family.

In that case, that's exactly what you can do with your domain.

Follow the steps in point 1 to set up a blog for you. Follow these simple steps to keep it private and inaccessible to everyone including search engines.

Step 1: Discourage search engines with these steps.

Go to the settings >> read >> Check the box next to "Prevent search engines from indexing this website".

This just prevents your website from showing up in search engines like Google's.

Step 2: People who know your blog address can still visit it without your permission. Use this plugin (free) to protect your website with an additional password and only allow selected people to view it.

7th Use the URL Domain for Branded Vanity

Sometimes the best use of an inactive, unused domain can be to just make it your custom branded link shortener. If you're wondering what a link shortener is, it's a small, custom domain that you use to shorten any link to make it branded and easy to remember.

Link shorteners can also be used to track clicks on that particular URL.

For example my portfolio url is http://www.swadhinagrawal.com/ which is great but I make it even cuter and easier to remember with my vanity domain swdh.in when I have to share my url with someone I do just give them http://swdh.in.

You can also use this domain to share articles on the web with a shortened url like you liked this article. You can use your domain to make the url like http://example.com/domain-guide or even shorter like http :, //example.com/shduHt

If you just don't want to invest in anything to use your parked domain effectively, you can simply log into your domain registrar's dashboard and redirect the domain to your social profiles such as Twitter profile or Facebook page.

This can be done for free.

For example, https://www.facebook.com/swadhinagrawalofficial can become https://swadh.in

9 Try domain flipping

When you have a good domain name, you can consider flipping the domain or selling it. This can be done to reclaim the money you invested in the domain or as a business where you buy and sell lots of lucrative domains.

Domain names can be sold at individual levels. However, when a large sum is at stake, you can use established sellers like flippa.com to be on the safe side and ensure that all transactions are carried out legally.
